History

Parkersburg, located in Wood County, West Virginia, has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1810. Named after a Revolutionary War hero, the city was chartered in 1820 and rechartered as a city in 1860. During the American Civil War, Parkersburg served as a significant transportation and medical center for Union forces. This role as a transportation hub continued to develop during the gas and oil boom. The city's history is closely tied to the pioneers of the area, with the Phelps-Tavenner House, built circa 1800, standing as the most historic property in Wood County. Today, the city's history is preserved by dedicated volunteers at the Wood County Historical & Preservation Society.
