History

In 1881, the town was christened “Nixa” in honor of local blacksmith Nicholas A. Inman. During its early years, Nixa saw the establishment of essential institutions, such as the school district in 1899 and the Nixa Hardware store. In 1902, it officially became a village, with continued growth evidenced by its baseball team and brass band by 1907. The town thrived with various businesses, including a flour mill, a canning factory, a soda-pop factory, and a cheese factory, but economic challenges, like the Great Depression, influenced population fluctuations. Nixa officially became a city in 1946, introducing crucial amenities like a municipal water system and a fire department. Over time, its population surged, reaching over 23,000 residents by 2020. Nixa’s history reflects its resilience and growth, making it a vibrant Missouri community.
